How long have you owned reptiles?: I was gifted my first Snake when I was 8 years old, so going on 20 years!
What’s your favorite part about owning reptiles?: I think they’re gorgeous, from color variations to scale texture, there’s a wide variety of reptiles with super unique features
What kind of environment do they live in?: Being cold-blooded, reptiles need access to areas that receive direct sunlight or are warm enough to maintain their body temperature. Leopard Geckos originally come from the Middle East’s rocky, dry grassland, and desert regions. Wild Ball Pythons live in Western and Central Africa, in tropical grasslands, savannas, and sparsely wooded areas. Their enclosures at home mimic these areas with the help of heat lights and under-tank heating pads.
What do they eat?: Leopard Geckos are insectivores meaning they only eat insects such as mealworms, crickets, and other commercially raised feeders. Ball Pythons are carnivorous and can eat live or dethawed frozen mice, chicks, quail, and rats.
What activities do you do to bond / play with them?: Handling them once a week is a great way to bond with reptiles. Unlike dogs and cats, reptiles don’t need the same type of attention and affection, and most ultimately enjoy being left alone. For those that are a bit more socialized, I have a screened-in enclosure outside they can explore in the natural sunlight on a nice day.
Do they have distinct personalities or unique traits? If so, what are they?: Starter reptiles (Ball pythons and leopard geckos) have gained popularity over the years for their low maintenance, beauty, and overall docile natures. Proper socialization with humans and a regular feeding schedule help some reptiles become comfortable around you and even excited when you approach their enclosure. Wendy is very mild and easygoing, she enjoys hanging out in my sweatshirt front pocket when I’m doing chores or lounging on the couch. Simon is a bit more timid but on a good day loves to explore.
Share any funny / interesting moments you’ve had with them: During winter break at college Simon escaped his temporary enclosure at my parent’s house and ended up living in the walls for 9 months before we were able to find him- I think that really explains his timid/adventurous personality
What do you wish people knew about reptiles?: I wish more people knew how diverse and fascinating reptiles are. Reptiles often have a reputation for being cold or dangerous, but many species have complex behaviors, and unique adaptations. Some reptiles, like crocodiles, show parental care, while others, like chameleons, can change color not just for camouflage but to communicate, making them much more dynamic than many people realize.
