When something breaks in your house (your furnace quits, the lights flicker, or a pipe starts doing its best impression of a waterfall), panic-Googling feels inevitable. And suddenly, the same names pop up everywhere: top of search results, flashy billboards, catchy radio jingles. They must be the best… right?
Not always.
The contractors who dominate Google or blanket the city with ads are often the ones with the biggest marketing budgets, not necessarily the fairest pricing or the most thoughtful approach. In some cases, you’re paying a premium for their visibility, not their craftsmanship. Worse, a rushed diagnosis or upsold “must-do” repair can leave homeowners spending far more than necessary.
That’s where your realtor quietly becomes your secret weapon. Experienced realtors work with electricians, plumbers, roofers, HVAC pros, and handymen all the time. They know who shows up on time, who explains things clearly, who charges fairly, and who doesn’t see dollar signs every time they walk into a house. These referrals are built on long-term relationships and real results, not algorithms nor ad spend.
For larger projects, another golden rule applies: never accept the first quote as gospel. Get at least two or three estimates. You’ll often discover differences not just in price, but in scope (i.e., what actually needs to be fixed versus what could be fixed if money were no object). Comparing bids helps you spot red flags, unnecessary upgrades, and wildly inflated costs.
Bottom line: loud doesn’t always mean trustworthy. Before you click the first link or call the number on the billboard, call your realtor. It could save you serious money…and a whole lot of stress.
