Green Is the New Black (and Orange): A Sustainable Halloween Guide

Halloween doesn’t have to be a nightmare for the environment. With a little creativity, you can transform your home into a haunted haven without the plastic waste. Here are some clever, sustainable ways to celebrate Halloween that are as kind to the planet as they are spooky.

  • Pumpkin Power: Pumpkins are a Halloween staple, and, as Treehugger notes, they’re “the ultimate in zero-waste Halloween decorations.”  Pumpkins are fully biodegradable, and after the holiday, you can compost them, roast the seeds for a snack, or even bake a pie with the leftover pulp.
  • DIY Lighting: Repurpose glass jars by painting them black and adding tea lights for an eerie glow. For a haunted vibe, line your walkway with these lanterns or swap out your exterior bulbs for colored ones.
  • Natural Webs: Treehugger recommends skipping synthetic spider webs and using natural twine to create webs between porch posts or trees. It’s biodegradable and adds a rustic touch.
  • Homemade Haunts: Create ghosts and witches from old sheets and pillowcases. Use twigs, leaves, and other natural elements to craft scarecrows and other decorations that won’t end up in a landfill.
  • Paper Bats: Cut out bats from recycled black paper and hang them around your home. They’re simple, spooky and recyclable when you’re done.
  • Creative Costumes: Instead of buying a new costume, the World Wildlife Foundation recommends repurposing old clothes or visiting a thrift store. Let your kids use their imagination to create something unique from what you already own.
  • Sustainable Treats: Opt for treats with minimal packaging or those in recyclable boxes. Encourage trick-or-treaters to use reusable bags like pillowcases, which can be decorated to match their costumes.

This Halloween, make your decorations as green as they are ghoulish. By reusing, repurposing, and choosing natural materials, you can enjoy the spooky season without scaring the planet. Happy (sustainable) haunting!
