There are many reasons to savor our good fortune this month: the Denver skyline is filled with construction cranes signaling economic growth, urban neighborhoods are buzzing with activity, and the city is garnering accolades from many corners.

First on the list of good news is a report released by Arizona University, citing Denver and Colorado among the top 10 cities and states for job growth. (Denver ranked No. 3; Colorado ranked No. 4 overall and No. 1 in the growth rate of government, professional and technical jobs.)  The ranking represents a major turnaround from 2010, when Colorado, still in the grips of the Recession, placed in the bottom ten for labor-market performance.

Clearly, jobs are of major importance the city’s vitality. But lifestyle issues also rank high for Denverites.  In other good news, the city was recently named a “Walk Friendly Community” by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center. This award is given to communities that “have shown a commitment to improving walkability and pedestrian safety through comprehensive programs, plans and policies,” according to the group’s website.

Denver earned the highest (gold-level) designation due to its concentrated focus on the issue. Walkability continually ranks high on the list of homebuyers’ priorities, as many seek neighborhoods that are in close proximity to stores, restaurants and other amenities.

The city also earned praise for its bicycle-friendly attitude, landing among the top ten cities for growth of commuters riding bikes to work. This is according to the US Census Bureau, which reports that 2.3% of Denver’s total commuters from 2008 to 2012 were bicyclers. That number is up from 1% in 2000 and far exceeds the national average of 0.6%.
