Pedal Through the Powder: Why Winter Riding is Worth the Ride

When the temperature drops, many cyclists stash their bikes until spring. But, winter doesn’t have to mean the end of two-wheeled adventures. Whether you’re commuting to work, getting in some exercise, or just riding for fun, biking through snow and chill can be just as rewarding as a summer spin.

The key is preparation. Winter streets can be unpredictable, so ride with intention and awareness. Brake gently, give yourself extra stopping distance, and anticipate slick patches. Drivers aren’t always expecting cyclists this time of year, and journalist Hilary Angus of Momentum Mag suggests, “Give motorists extra space, stay out of blind spots, and make eye contact with drivers whenever possible.” A little caution goes a long way toward keeping your ride smooth and safe.

Visibility becomes even more important once daylight dwindles. Invest in bright, waterproof front and rear lights and don’t hesitate to double up. Pair those lights with bold, high-visibility gear so motorists can’t miss you in a swirl of snow or a foggy dusk.

Comfort is just as essential as safety. Cold hands and feet can turn a joyful ride into misery, so layer up with insulated gloves, shoe covers, and a windproof outer shell. Accessories like neck gaiters and thermal hats under your helmet make a big difference. Keeping warm means you’ll actually enjoy the ride instead of counting down the blocks until you can thaw out.

Last but not least, take care of your bike. Angus notes that bike maintenance is key in the colder months. “Wipe your bike down every day to avoid rust,” she says.

Winter biking isn’t about being hardcore; it’s about embracing the season on your own terms. Start with short rides to get a feel for the conditions, mix biking with public transit when needed, and don’t be afraid to skip a day when the weather looks treacherous. With the right mindset and gear, you’ll discover a whole new way to love cycling – snowflakes and all.
