If you have relatives pouring into town for Thanksgiving, young children in tow, you have more on your plate than planning dinner: How will you entertain the kids?

There are always the usual spots, such as the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and the Denver Zoo. But we’ve come across a little-known Denver gem you might want to add to the agenda: The Denver Firefighter’s Museum.

This sure kid-pleaser is located downtown at 1326 Tremont Place, just a block from the Denver Mint. It’s housed in the former home of Engine Co. No. 1 and dates to 1909, a time when fire equipment was pulled by horses. The historic building features fire-fighting equipment, uniforms, and other related items spanning more than 150 years—from even before the Denver Fire Department was founded in 1866.

Better yet, the museum is holding a special exhibit of firefighting toys and models from November through December.

Mark your calendar: the museum is open Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
