How well do you know your Denver architecture? When it comes to homes, the city has a handful of distinct styles, recently detailed in 5280 magazine’s feature “Denver Architecture 101.” Following in 5280’s footsteps, we are offering an ongoing tutorial of Denver’s iconic options. Today, we study Mediterranean Revival.

What to look for: Think of the white stucco homes with red tile roofs shimmering against a brilliant blue sky on the hills of Greece. Or think of something closer to home—say, Beverly Hills: “Silver screen aficionados obsess over these tile-roofed gems, which call to mind the artful architectural wonders of old Hollywood,” notes Westword. Denver’s Mediterranean style homes are generally much smaller than anything movie moguls would inhabit (an average of 1,200 square feet, according to Westword), but they’re just as distinctive, with windows shaped like arches, low-pitched roofs and decorative use of wrought iron, particularly on balconies.

Where to find them: South Park Hill and Sloan’s Lake
