Why wait any longer? This summer is the perfect time to plan a DIY deck project. The magazine offers these tips:

Study decking material options: Whether it’s real wood, pressure-treated cedar, or a composite, each has its pros and cons. Hardwoods offer longevity and a rich look, but they can be expensive. Composites, such as vinyl, are maintenance free, but offer a different look than real wood. Research the field thoroughly before making a decision.

Think of creating different levels: This allows you to make separate furniture groupings that support intimate conversation and can enhance visual appeal.

Choose attractive railings: The right railing can improve the look of deck. Options include glass, metal, vinyl, composites and cabling.

Use color: Consider your deck’s compatibility with the color of the home. “The right shades can mean the difference between a deck that looks like a stuck-on foreign object and one that’s a natural extension of your home,” notes Better Homes and Gardens.

Create overhead shade: In blazing hot summer afternoons, it’s nice to have shade. Consider building a pergola over a portion of the deck. It will provide shade—and a place to attach lights and hanging plants.

Don’t be square: Design your deck with angles and curves that give it a custom, rather than out-of-the-box appearance.
