We’re excited to be kicking off our WEEKEND HAPPENINGS blog post each Thursday about some of the many events going on in our Mile High City. Here are some of our top picks:

FRIDAY 8/15

Get the kids out early in the day and head to the WOW! Children’s Museum in Lafayette to take part in their Growing Garden program. The museum has partnered with Ollin Farms this summer for monthly gardening sessions that encourage kids to learn more about growing their plants and vegetables. wow children's museum denver lafayette growing gardensThis month the group will harvest veggies and prepare the museum’s outdoor garden for the autumn months. In the evening head to the opening night of the 2014 Colorado Independent Women of Film Festival at the Bug Theater on Navajo Street. Catch the Opening Night Shorts at 7PM and the Documentary Block at 9PM, where you can see short films about a variety of things, including the US community food movement and ancient Mayan civilization. SATURDAY 8/16

Wake up early Saturday to take part in AIDS Walk Colorado at Cheesman Park. Registration begins at 7:30AM and the Opening Ceremony begins at 9AM. Make it a day by enjoying their beer garden and food vendors, and hang around to watch the Volleyball tournament and Diva Dash Stiletto Fun Run. Have fun while supporting a fantastic cause with proceeds going to services for HIV/AIDS clients of Colorado AIDS Project and more than 20 other AIDS service organizations. Read more here.

If you live in Denver it’s pretty safe to assume you love beer, and if you do – don’t miss Hops in the Hangar Saturday night from 6-10PM at the Air & Space Museum in Lowry. Sample an assortment of beer, nosh on food from Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, and rock out hops in the hangar denver beerto the Black and Blues Guys – a Blues Brothers tribute band. SUNDAY 8/17

Bring your family and your pooches to Woof Fest on Sunday from 12-6PM at Civic Center Park. Admission is free and you can enjoy local bands, beer, food trucks, and more. They promise to be the “premier pet-friendly one-day music festival in Colorado.” Proceeds will benefit PetAid Colorado. Read more here.
