RE/MAX of Cherry Creek Professionals Attend 2011 Breakfast of Scholars in Support of Summer Scholars Year-Round Extended Learning Program Award-Winning Program Provides High-Quality Reading, Language, and Math Tutoring to 2,000 Children Each Year DENVER – Caring real estate professionals with RE/MAX of Cherry Creek recently attended the 2011 Breakfast of Scholars held Thursday, June 23, 2011 in Denver. The event and attendees support Summer Scholars, a year-round program that equips low-income, academically-struggling elementary students with the skills necessary to attain academic success through literacy intervention and enrichment activities that build resiliency. “Our agents contribute to Summer Scholars, which supports underperforming students by partnering with 20 Denver elementary schools to provide reading, language and math tutoring, in addition to enrichment and family literacy to 2,000 children and families each year,” said Lynn Hetterich, Broker Associate and co-owner of RE/MAX of Cherry Creek. “To date, the breakfast has raised approximately $40,000 for the Summer Scholars program, of which our contribution is a part of,” said Terry Thoeming, Broker and co-owner of the top-producing real estate company. “We are very proud participants and I wish to thank my colleagues for their generous support.” “The Summer Scholars program was piloted in Denver in 1994 and has become a model for similar programs around the country,” said Galo Garrido, Broker/co-owner and President of RE/MAX of Cherry Creek. “Summer Scholars is funded by donations from individuals and businesses, and we are proud to help the program. Several of our agents also mentor readers each week in Denver Public Schools’ classrooms during the school year.” Participants in Summer Scholars are mostly low-income elementary students ages five through 11. Last year, 53 percent of the participants were Latino, 34 percent African-American, seven percent Anglo, and six percent from other or mixed ethnicity. Eighty-four percent of the students were eligible for the federal free lunch program, which is a measure of low family income. Typically, forty-nine percent of the students are boys and fifty-one percent girls. For more information and to make a contribution, visit www.summerscholars.org.
