Don’t let the grind of mountain traffic dampen your spirits. Here, some tips from 5280 on where to grab a bite on the way to and from the mountains – whether you’re skiing, biking or hiking –  when I-70 turns into a parking lot.

Glenwood Springs: Take a pit stop at Glenwood Canyon Brewpub (402 7th St, Glenwood Springs) to indulge in short rib pot pie or elk jalapeño sausage mac and cheese while sipping on a Hanging Lake light lager.

Vail: Delay your departure by grabbing a bite at Los Amigos (400 Bridge St, Vail), known best for its window-seat spectacle of skiers attempting the black-diamond Pepi’s Face. For a more upscale menu, El Segundo (223 Gore Creek Dr, Vail) offers an eclectic mix, or try the affordable Westside Cafe (2211 N Frontage Rd West, Vail) for elk chili burgers.

Leadville: For those dipping down to U.S. 285, High Mountain Pies (115 West 4th St, Leadville) is a must. Try the Crocodile pizza or build your own calzone before hitting the road.

Frisco, Silverthorne, and Dillon: Outer Range Brewing Company (182 Lusher Ct, Frisco) offers “Thai-ish” fried chicken and poke tots. Prosit (313 E Main St, Frisco) in Breck satisfies with German brews, sausages, and pretzels. Syndicate Brewing Co. (203 Summit Pl, Silverthorne) is perfect for sports fans.

Georgetown: Discover a hidden gem at Cabin Creek Brewing (577 Twenty-Second St, Georgetown). Amazing views and decadent delights await, including loaded tots, smoked brats, Reubens, burgers and more.

Idaho Springs: Navigate foodie favorites in this mining town. Westbound & Down Brewing (1617 Miner St, Idaho Springs) serves a heavenly fried chicken sandwich, while Smokin’ Yards (2736 Colorado Blvd, Idaho Springs) is all about the barbecue.

Golden: As you inch closer to Denver, save yourself the trouble of cooking at home with a stop at Over Yonder Brewing (18455 W Colfax Ave #103, Golden), offering local brews and gourmet treats from Launch Café next door. For something more upscale, try Vice Kitchen (18445 W Colfax Ave #104, Golden) for wine, whiskey, and enticing entrees.

As you navigate the traffic, both east- and west-bound, turn gridlock into a gourmet journey that adds a dash of flavor to your travel tale.
