Name: Rio

Owner: Eddie Lederman

How’d you come up with his name? When we went to the dog pound and met him, he jumped right into my girlfriend’s lap and furiously licked her, I knew he would be a handful, full of energy. I named him Rio (Spanish for River) because he was like a fish out of water, it was a 2 syllable name, with a vowel sound at the end. Easy to pronounce and yell out quickly and with fervor.

Nicknames: rio Bubbas, Babushka, Rio-Rita (the name of our wedding margherita), Old Man, Bubbs

Breed: Denver Dog Pound Special (catahoula mixed with Australian Shepherd)

Age: 16 years old

Favorite Toy: Food, and up until about 2 years ago, the Ultimate Frisbee, I would practice my huck throws and he would chase it and return it until he was half dead and then would begin chewing holes in it, unless I had treats to trade.

Likes: He loves humans, tolerates other dogs, except he gets very excited about puppies and he barely tolerates the cats in his life. Attached is a picture of Miles Davis, a kitten he lived with that would always harass and love on him, pouncing on him right when he was about to sleep.

Most happy when: Hiking and Camping

What’s his favorite food? Pumpkin, Pizza, McDonalds Chicken Nuggets, Elk Cheeseburgers, Chocolate Cake, essentially anything that his drunk owners leaves out for him to take advantage of, oh yea, and trash, with extra helpings of coffee and beer.

How would you describe his personality? Bubbas is a southern country boy who languorously resides in the shade waiting for time to pass with a desultory approach to the musings of life and disappointment. He is a consummate lover of anyone who crosses his doorstep and a libertine of epicurean proportion. His southern etiquette makes him an excellent host to the point of being overbearing and he is good-looking to a fault, a fact he exploits often in the presence of company.

What’s your favorite part about Rio? He’s loyal and very affectionate. People, including my wife, love him even more than they love me. Some of my roommates would hate me, but would love him unabashedly.

What is his favorite spot in your home? On the bed with us or in the backyard on the grass.

What’s the most rewarding part about being a pet owner? Pets augment life’s experiences by enjoying them even more, especially hiking and camping, they are always there with you when you’re lonely and sad, and RIo can’t stand it when you cry and will lick your tears faster than they can appear.
