Soundtrack of Summer: Spotlight on Red Rocks

We previously covered the Arvada Center and the Levitt Pavilion as two must-visit spots for summer concerts, but when people think of Colorado concert venues, one name almost always rises above the rest: Red Rocks. Nestled among towering sandstone monoliths just outside Morrison, this legendary open-air amphitheater has become one of the most iconic music venues in the world…and for good reason. Officially dedicated in 1941, Red Rocks was built into naturally formed rock formations that create extraordinary acoustics and jaw-dropping scenery unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Beyond the geology and history, there’s simply something magical about seeing live music here. Massive red cliffs frame the stage, the Denver skyline twinkles in the distance, and even casual concertgoers suddenly feel like they’re part of something cinematic. Over the decades, everyone from The Beatles to U2 has played at Red Rocks, helping cement its reputation as a bucket-list venue for both artists and fans.

If you’re heading to a summer show, seasoned locals will tell you the same thing: go early. Many concertgoers turn the parking lots into informal tailgates with snacks, drinks, and portable speakers before hiking up to the venue. Just be prepared for stairs (lots of them!) and changing weather, as Red Rocks can go from sunshine to thunderstorm in a hurry.

Not feeling the drive? There are transportation options. Uber and Lyft service the venue, although surge pricing and wait times after concerts can be significant. Shuttle services and party buses also operate from Denver throughout the season, including the popular Bus to Show shuttle service and Red Rocks Shuttle

Before the music starts, spend some time in Morrison, the tiny mountain town at Red Rocks’ doorstep. Grab dinner or cocktails at Hungry Goat Scratch Kitchen & Wine Bar, a local favorite known for its patio and elevated comfort food, or stop by the Morrison Inn to sip their legendary margaritas.

Keep watching this space for information on more summer concert venues worth visiting!
