Today’s tip: Protect your foundation from water damage

With the coming spring season, late snow and heavy rainstorms can wreak havoc on unprepared homes. It’s critical to keep water away from your house’s foundation. Check for these 3 things:

1) Make sure the water is deposited 10 horizontal feet away from your home’s foundation by using downspout extensions, splash blocks or downspout drains. Also be sure your landscaping slopes away from the home, dropping at least 6 inches vertically for every 6-10 inches of horizontal feet.

2) Clean your gutters to allow water to drain properly from the roof.

3) If your home has a sump pump, now is the time to make sure it’s running properly.
