When a couple makes a decision to expand their family and have a child, their whole world changes as they embark upon bringing a new little human being into the world. Along with the joy of raising a child, there are a lot of initial steps that take planning and preparation. One thing that we – as a real estate agency – have seen and know a lot about is how to make your home child-safe and ready for the new addition that will eventually be crawling around and discovering all of your house’s nooks and crannies. The RE/MAX blog outlines a few important steps to plan on to make the transition a bit smoother:
- Declutter: Make room for the new baby items by getting rid of everything you don’t need. Doing so will also add a sense of calm in your new busy life!
- Baby-proof in stages: Work on child proofing in steps, taking care of things just before the appropriate stage in your child’s life. For example, if they’re not crawling yet, you don’t need to worry about putting up baby gates.
- Create a functional nursery: Don’t get carried away by beautiful designs, and be sure to keep things practical and functional. The author recommends installing window coverings that block UV rays to keep it comfortable during sleep times.
- Check your smoke detectors: Keep safe by making sure your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are working, since it’s one of those things that can be easily forgotten.
Getting everything ready in advance will save you the headache of having to deal with these things when you are experiencing a lack of sleep and constant diaper changes, so be sure to plan early and prep your home if you have a new one on the way!
