Birdwatching in Denver is like finding a hidden gem in the urban jungle—a delightful adventure that rewards patience with glimpses of nature’s most exquisite winged wonders. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or a curious newcomer, Denver’s birding hotspots offer a diverse array of avian experiences that are sure to captivate and inspire. Grab your binoculars, and let’s explore some of the best birdwatching locations in the Denver metro area.

Washington Park: Nestled in the heart of Denver, Washington Park is a bustling green space where you can spot a variety of birds without leaving the city. 5280 notes that while popular (human) parks typically don’t attract a lot of birds, Wash Park always offers avian encounters, including geese, mallards, northern shovelers, and the occasional bald eagle.

Bluff Lake Nature Center: For those who prefer their birdwatching with a side of water, Bluff Lake Nature Center is a must-visit. Occupying 123 acres adjacent to Sand Creek on the eastern edge of the former Stapleton Airport, 5280 reports that local birders have identified more than 220 bird species at this refuge. Hikes and observation spots give way to waterfowl, birds of prey, and more.

Hudson Lake Park: Between I-25 and Lakewood, this park is a favorite of songbirds as well as migrating shorebirds who use the lake as “a rest stop,” notes 5280. Keep an eye out for two types of rare sparrows: Harris’s sparrow and the white-throated sparrow.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge: Although just outside of Denver, this 15,000-acre sanctuary is recommended by the National Audubon Society. Offering year-round bird sightings, Audubon notes that it’s also worth a stop at the visitor’s center to discover the history of the area.

In Denver, birdwatching is more than a hobby—it’s an opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty that exists right in our backyard. So, the next time you’re looking for a peaceful retreat or a thrilling chase for that elusive species, remember that Denver’s birding hotspots have got you covered. Happy birding!
