Before you relax for the summer, be sure these 4 chores are complete

You’ve set up your patio furniture, fired up the gas grill and begun enjoying the joys of summer.

But there are also important maintenance chores that come with the warm weather. Before you get too comfortable in that cushy lounge chair, be sure you’ve attended to the business of caring for your home.

Here are 4 important items on any summer to-do list, as suggested by MasterThis website:

Service your air conditioner: The first step is to change the furnace air filter, as “clogged and dirty filters make air conditioning systems work harder, stay on longer and cost more to run,” notes the website. Next, turn on the unit. “If the A/C doesn’t kick on (it might take a minute), check your circuit breakers or fuses.” If you still have problems, call a professional.

Clean windows and screens: Remove storm windows and spray with cleaning solution. Dry with newspaper or squeegee. “While you’re cleaning…[l]ook for signs of dry rot and water damage…Check the seals around the windows as well, and re-caulk or replace damaged weather stripping where needed,” advises MasterThis. Also, use a hose and mild detergent to clean window screens.

Inspect your roof: If you aren’t comfortable getting up on the roof, use binoculars to check for cracked, misplaced or missing shingles. “Also check flashing (those metal pieces where the shingles meet places like your chimney) for rust.”

Clean gutters and downspouts: Damage to either can lead to water pooling around your foundation and possibly seeping into your basement. First scoop out debris that has accumulated over the winter. Then hose out the gutters and watch the water’s path. Be sure there are no leaks and that water flows through the downspouts and away from the house.
