Aurora redevelopment projects create excitement

It’s been a long journey for the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center. But after years of enduring cost over-run controversies, the Center has been up and running for about ten months now.

How is it faring?

The Denver Business Journal recently ran the numbers, comparing the new facility to the old. Here are some facts:

Original cost estimate: $604 million

Final cost: Approximately $1.7 billion


Old facility: 670,000 square feet on 13 acres

New facility: 1.2 million square feet on 31 acres


Old facility: 148 beds

New facility 148 beds, with 168 more expected when a new PTSD rehabilitation program facility is built.


Old facility: 59 medical surgical beds, 36 psychiatry beds

New facility: 50 medical surgical beds, 30 psychiatry beds


Meanwhile, other numbers tell an equally exciting story: the area around the hospital is burgeoning with projects.

For example, construction is underway on what used to be the Fitzsimons golf course. The 184-acre swath of land is being redeveloped for a large bioscience building, dubbed Bioscience 3.

The Colorado Real Estate Journal calls the future science hub “one of the nation’s largest and most ambitious biotechnology communities of its kind,” noting that it will house “a variety of companies and scientists working collaboratively to turn leading-edge research into innovative medical products and services.”

In addition, developers plan to build more housing and at least one hotel in the same area.

Cranes will be also seen at the Anschutz Medical Campus, as UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital plans to build an 11-story tower to increase its patient capacity, among other goals. The project will cost “roughly $388 million,” according to the Denver Post, and will add 103 inpatient beds.
