4 home improvement projects that inspire joy

by | Nov 4, 2019 | Blog, Home & Lifestyle

There are many practical reasons to remodel your home. Renovation can increase your home’s value for resale, for instance, or make the space more livable. But there’s also an intangible benefit: the sheer joy of making the home your own.

Indeed, homeowners report substantial emotional benefits to completing a remodel. According to a study by the National Associations of Realtors (NAR), 74% of homeowners said they felt a greater desire to be in their homes after completing a remodeling project; 65% reported increased enjoyment, and 58% noted a “feeling of happiness when they see their completed projects.”

Some projects, of course, inspire greater satisfaction than others. Among the most gratifying, according to NAR, are complete kitchen renovations, closet remodels, full interior re-painting or individual room painting, and finishing basements. Satisfying exterior projects include: new wood, fiberglass or steel front doors, new vinyl and wood windows, and new roofs.

Just how satisfying are these endeavors? The NAR has calculated a “Joy Score” for certain projects, based on the happiness homeowners reported with their renovations.

Below, a few projects and their scores (10 being the highest):

Kitchen remodel, Joy Score 10: There’s no doubt that kitchen renovations improve “functionality” and “livability,” notes the NAR. But they also give homeowners a wealth of enjoyment, as the kitchen is a room family members visit often throughout the day. “So when that area is remodeled to owners’ exact preferences,” they continually experience “the satisfaction of a job well done” as they enter and exit the room,” notes NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun.

Closet renovation, Joy Score 10: Disorganized closets can be a constant annoyance, with clutter that begs to be pared down. No wonder 72% of survey respondents noted that after finishing the job, they had a greater desire to be at home.

Full interior paint job, Joy Score 9.8: There’s nothing like erasing years of fingerprints, scrapes and dirt build-up with the stroke of a paintbrush. Eighty-eight percent of respondents reported a greater desire to be home after painting their interiors, and 86% reported feeling “a major sense of accomplishment.”

New front door, Joy Score 9.7: Whether wood, fiberglass or steel, an attractive front door can bring a sense of pride and subtly change the look of the exterior. For example, 77% of respondents said that after installing a new fiberglass door, they “have an increased sense of enjoyment when they are at home.”
